This resource advocates for the unmet needs of individuals in the UK whose experience of gender and/or identity is wholly or partially incompatible with The Family Proclamation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Why advocate? Because people who experience complications with gender and identity need and deserve to be heard, understood, and protected from abuse.
Most Church members who have a testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ occupy a relatively uncomplicated space in respect of matters of gender and/or identity. The small proportion who experience challenges in this regard find themselves yoked to a state of emotional discomfort — with the official advice being to remain quiet, endure, and have faith that the issues will go away. They never do, so some individuals feel their only remedy is to cut short either their lives or their Church membership.
This resource aims to take a principled stand for empathy, charity, and Christlike love without devaluing The Family Proclamation. It is unquestionably complex territory to navigate, but both the Church and individuals have a duty to rise above bigotry and prejudice in pursuit of greater understanding.
When the position of the Church embraces transparency and attention to individual welfare, there will be no further need for this resource.
